Beyond the Uniform: Stories from the National Park Service

This series, in honor of the National Park Service centennial, offers a snapshot of what it’s like to work within the park system. We hear from park rangers, desk jockeys, curators and others who help with interpretation, law enforcement, and conservation — the fundamentals of the region’s many valuable historic sites.

The National Park Service turns 100 in August. The celebrating has started with loads of events that showcase the big parks — and the little ones — treasured sources of recreation, conservation, and historic preservation.

In the coming weeks, we honor our region's national historic parks by bringing you audio postcards from some of the men and women who work for them.

In our first installment, B.J. Dunn shares some memorable experiences from his 26 years with the park service. He's a deputy superintendent at Independence National Historic Park in Philadelphia.

In his line of work, he said, you meet a lot of people, and you never know what the day may bring.

He says working in a small state — in a small, new national historic park — doesn't mean he and his two coworkers don’t think big. McKinley especially enjoys educational outreach programs, where they introduce poor, urban kids to outdoor spaces.
